Every day, thousands of stray animals struggle to survive on our streets—searching for food, shelter, and safety in a world that often turns a blind eye. One of the most humane and impactful ways to end this silent suffering is sterilization, also known as spaying and neutering. At Hamdard Animal Welfare Foundation (HAWF), we believe sterilization is not just a medical procedure—it’s a lifesaving intervention.
1. Overpopulation Crisis
A single unsterilized female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in just six years. Cats? Even more. This rapid reproduction results in countless animals being born into lives of hunger, disease, abuse, and abandonment. Most of them never find homes. Sterilization prevents unwanted births, cutting the cycle before it begins.
2. Reduces Animal Suffering
When populations grow unchecked, competition for food and shelter intensifies. Unsterilized animals are more likely to roam, get injured in fights, suffer from infections, or die in road accidents. Sterilization makes animals calmer and healthier—reducing aggressive behavior, territorial fights, and mating-related injuries.
3. Improves Community Safety
Stray overpopulation often leads to fear and conflict within neighborhoods. Sterilized dogs are less likely to exhibit aggressive behavior or chase people, especially children. Through organized sterilization drives, we create safer environments—for both humans and animals.
4. Supports Rabies Control
When animals are sterilized, they are also vaccinated against rabies—protecting communities from this fatal but preventable disease. It’s a dual-action solution that saves lives on both ends of the leash.
5. Cost-Effective, Long-Term Solution
Feeding strays is noble, but without sterilization, it only sustains an ever-growing population. Sterilization is not a one-time charity—it’s a long-term investment in the wellbeing of entire communities. With fewer animals to care for, resources stretch farther, and shelters can focus on rehabilitation and adoption.
